David Barr

At age 16 David Barr began a promising shaping career only to be interrupted by another career as a professional surfer.  After working his way up, he broke into the pro tour top 20 and stayed there four years competing in contests all over the world including South Africa (winning at Jeffrey’s Bay), Hawaii, Australia, Europe, and the East and West Coasts of the USA.  Always interested in shaping, he used all of this riding experience to constantly hone his conceptual shaping skills and to better understand the craft of shaping.  As his professional career began to wind down he refocused on the art and science of building boards.

Barr credits early mentoring by Dick Brewer and Gary Linden plus seven years shaping for Rusty Preisendorfer as critical in his development as a top shaper.  “Their guidance was invaluable and they provided a really solid base of knowledge to grow from”.  To date he has shaped over 20,000 boards including boards for Taylor Knox, Brad Gerlach, Dean Morrison, and many, many more.  David still surfs almost daily and whenever it’s on is out paddling or towing into the massive waves of Todos Santos.
